WOODLAND PARK — FORMERLY WEST PATERSON

Roofing in Woodland Park, NJ — Hillside Homes on the Garret Mountain Ridge

Woodland Park sits on the Garret Mountain side of the Watchung ridge at roughly 348 feet of elevation, which puts it in a different roofing category from its low-lying neighbors. Up here the dominant threat to a roof is wind, not river water. Hidalgo Brothers handles roof repair, replacement and low-slope work throughout the borough from our Wharton shop, and we spec ridge-exposed roofs differently: fastening pattern, starter course and ridge detail carry more weight than they do on a sheltered lot. One local note — the borough was called West Paterson until 1 January 2009, and plenty of paperwork still says so.

Roofing on the Ridge: What Woodland Park Homeowners Should Know

1

The borough was named West Paterson until 1 January 2009 — older deeds, insurance policies and roofing warranties may still carry that name.

2

At about 348 feet on the Garret Mountain ridge, wind uplift is the leading cause of roof damage here, not flooding.

4

Ridge-exposed roofs need attention to the starter course, nailing pattern and ridge cap, which is where wind damage almost always begins.

Woodland Park is a small borough with a big view. It sits on Garret Mountain, part of the Watchung range, and is home to Rifle Camp Park with its observatory and nature center; Garret Mountain Reservation and Lambert Castle sit right alongside it. Elevation of about 348 feet is not dramatic in absolute terms, but on a ridge that catches weather coming across the valley it changes what a roof has to survive. Hidalgo Brothers is a family-run New Jersey roofing and exterior company, working since 2014 from 350 W Dewey Ave in Wharton and registered as NJ HIC #13VH08024500. We handle roof repair, roof replacement, new roof installation, flat and low-slope roofing, gutters and drainage and siding, so a wind-damaged roof edge that has also taken out a length of gutter and a strip of siding is one call and one crew. You can read more about our family-run company if you like to know who is showing up.

The sequence on a Woodland Park job:

  1. Free inspection of the roof, the roof edge and the attic, photographed as we go.

  2. A written itemized estimate — and an honest statement of which slope is actually the problem.

  3. Scheduling with an eye on the forecast, because tearing off a ridge-top roof ahead of a wind event is not something we do.

  4. Installation, daily cleanup, and a walk-through together before we invoice.

Why a Ridge-Top Roof in Woodland Park Wears Differently

On an exposed ridge, a roof fails at its edges long before it fails in the middle. Wind does not lift a shingle out of the centre of a slope; it gets underneath a tab at the eave, the rake or the ridge and works from there. Once the first course is compromised, the courses above it lose their anchor and the damage propagates in a line.

That means the details we care most about on a Woodland Park house are the ones a homeowner never sees. Is the starter course a real starter strip, properly adhered, or is it an upside-down shingle someone improvised? Is the nailing pattern in the manufacturer's high-wind configuration, or the standard four-nail pattern? Is the ridge cap a purpose-made cap or cut-up field shingles? Is the rake edge properly fastened with drip edge underneath? Get those right and an ordinary architectural shingle will hold on this ridge for its full life. Get them wrong and you will be calling someone every March.

The Name Change: Woodland Park Was West Paterson Until 2009

The borough was incorporated as West Paterson in 1914 and renamed Woodland Park effective 1 January 2009. This is more than trivia when there is a roof problem. Older homeowners still say West Paterson. Deeds, insurance policies, home inspection reports and — importantly — roofing warranties issued before 2009 may name the property in West Paterson.

If you are trying to work out whether an existing roof is still under a manufacturer or workmanship warranty, search under both names. We have found valid paperwork for Woodland Park homeowners that they had given up on because everything on file said West Paterson. It costs nothing to check before you pay for a replacement.

What We Find Most Often on Woodland Park Roofs

  • Creased or missing shingle tabs along the exposed windward slope, with the sheltered slopes still in good condition — the classic ridge-lot pattern.

  • Ridge caps lifted or lost, often the first visible sign after a wind event.

  • Drip edge missing or poorly fastened at the rake, letting wind get under the edge course.

  • Gutters pulled loose at the fascia, usually a consequence of the same wind rather than a separate problem.

  • Chimney counterflashing loosened where mortar has weathered on an exposed elevation.

  • Debris and moss on the north-facing slopes under the tree line near the park boundary.

Drainage Still Matters, Even Up Here

Slippery Rock Brook, a tributary of the Passaic, runs through Woodland Park, and the lower streets of the borough deal with runoff like anywhere else. Elevation protects you from river flooding; it does not protect you from a gutter that has lost its pitch or a downspout that discharges at the foundation.

On a ridge lot there is also a specific risk worth naming: wind-driven rain gets under a gutter's back edge and into the fascia when the drip edge is missing or set wrong. The gutter looks fine and the fascia rots behind it. We check that detail on every roof inspections and maintenance here, because it is invisible from the ground and expensive once it has been running for a few years.

Picking Materials for an Exposed Woodland Park Roof

Architectural asphalt shingles are the right answer for most homes in the borough, provided they are installed in the high-wind configuration the manufacturer specifies rather than the standard one. We install systems from the manufacturers displayed on our site — GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Atlas among them — and we keep the underlayment, starter strip, hip-and-ridge and accessories within the same system so the assembly performs as it was tested.

Metal comes up as a question on exposed lots more often here than in the low towns, and it is a legitimate option — standing seam has no tabs for wind to lift. It costs more and it is not right for every house, so we will price it alongside asphalt and let you compare rather than steering you. Where a Woodland Park home has a flat garage roof, a rear addition or a deck-over-living-space section, that gets EPDM or TPO membrane, not shingles.

What It Costs, and What the Contract Should Say

For a statewide benchmark, HomeAdvisor's New Jersey roof replacement guide (updated June 2026) reports typical costs of roughly $10,000 to $80,000, an average near $15,000, and about $5 to $12 per square foot on a 2,000 square foot property. Your figure depends on roof area, pitch, layer count, deck condition and how many penetrations the roof carries — all of which appear as separate lines on our estimates.

New Jersey requires a written contract for home improvement work over $500, including the contractor's registration number, insurance details, a full description of the work, warranty terms and a three-day cancellation notice. On permits, replacing an existing roof covering on a detached one- or two-family dwelling is ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(c)(1)(x) and generally requires no permit application; structural repairs are a different matter. Woodland Park's own Department of Inspections is who we confirm with before starting.

FAQ

Woodland Park used to be called West Paterson — does that affect my roof warranty?

It can. The borough was renamed Woodland Park effective 1 January 2009, so warranties, insurance policies and inspection reports issued before then may list the property in West Paterson. If you are checking whether an existing roof is still covered, search under both names before you assume it is not.

Why does only one side of my Woodland Park roof look worn?

That is the classic ridge-lot pattern. Wind hits one slope consistently and lifts shingles at the eave, the rake and the ridge, while the sheltered slopes age normally. It also means a partial repair is more often a legitimate option here than in a low, sheltered neighborhood.

What actually stops wind damage on an exposed roof?

Edge detailing. A proper adhered starter strip, the manufacturer's high-wind nailing pattern rather than the standard one, purpose-made hip-and-ridge caps instead of cut field shingles, and drip edge correctly fastened at eave and rake. Those four details do more than upgrading the shingle itself.

Is metal roofing worth it in Woodland Park?

It is a reasonable question on an exposed ridge lot, because standing seam has no tabs for wind to get under. It costs considerably more than asphalt and is not right for every roofline. We will price both so you can compare on your own house rather than on a generalization.

Does Woodland Park flood?

The borough sits at roughly 348 feet on the Garret Mountain ridge, so river flooding is not the primary concern that it is in neighboring low-lying towns. Slippery Rock Brook does run through, and ordinary runoff and drainage still need handling — which is a gutter and grading question more than a roof question.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Woodland Park?

For a like-for-like replacement of the roof covering on a detached one- or two-family home, New Jersey classifies the work as ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(c)(1)(x) and a permit application is generally not required. Structural work is not exempt. We confirm with the borough's Department of Inspections before we start.

Have Your Woodland Park Roof Looked At Before the Next Wind Event

Wind damage on a ridge lot rarely announces itself. It starts as one lifted tab and becomes a missing section during the storm after the one you noticed.

Call (973) 525-6835 or request your free estimate online. We inspect the edges as carefully as the field, show you the photos, and tell you plainly whether it is a repair or a replacement.
